SUSANT TAMANG: OUR ARTISAN AND HIS DRIVE TO SUCCEED
Born in Kathmandu, from a middle-class family, he turned 22 this year. His parents are from the Kavrepalanchowk region, a little way away from the capital city. His responsibilities towards his family began to grow when he turned 18 with expectations which he tried hard to fulfill.
With an aim of joining the British Army (The British Gurkha) he joined the army training program for the first time. He worked hard to succeed in to fulfill his own dream, but he failed, he tried again the next time but failed again. After twice being unsuccessful in the selection rounds, he was left completely de-motivated and decided to take a step back to reflect, not doing anything for a year. During this time, he only had one thing on his mind, ‘why was I unable to achieve my dream?’
The yearlong break did him some good, he started seeking jobs to survive and to meet family needs believing that it was the only way out as nothing was going the way that he had planned. Eventually, he got the job of a salesman in a handicrafts shop. It is said that one’s destination is written by God when he or she is sent to the planet Earth, this is how Susant saw it, that this was the path that he was supposed to take and that this work would lead him to find what it is that he was always looking for. Days passed, and he quickly started learning everything there is to know about the handicrafts that were being sold in the store as well as the process of making them himself. His passion for jewelry making grew from there.
Susee Design, the name given by Susant himself for his business in making handicrafts is largely focused on making jewelry. His new mission in life is to create and provide the best of Nepal, offering the best Nepalese handicrafts in the world. With huge ambitions and an ethic of hard work and determination, he is also focused in uplifting the local talent of Nepal, giving encouragement, opportunities, and to giving back to the community that gave him hope.
He was asked what he thought inspired him the most, he pointed to his close friend Krishna who has always believed in him. It is but one, short sentence that has stuck with him. “Do not seek for a job but create your own.”
